Sub Zero Maintenance Guide
This Guide is designed to Save You Time and Money. Lets be honest, calling an appliance repair service from the web can be a crap shoot. Most of the time you would prefer to handle your own problems and save money doing so, I know I do. If you are a home owner I suggest making an appointment with an appliance company specializing in Sub-Zero before beginning this guide, its always good to get your appointment first. If you fix it yourself, call and cancel, not a big deal.This guide will start with simple things that you can do to fix your problem and then start to get more into mechanical detail, follow along as long as you like. Find, Reveal, and Clean your Condenser
Why We Do this First: Dust impedes airflow over the compressors, starving the unit of necessary airflow, this causes inefficiencies and the machine run longer and HOT. Sometimes this dirty, clogged condenser is the entire problem with the machine. No matter what, your condenser needs to be cleaned, this is a great starting point to begin diagnosing your Sub-Zero’s problem and even fixing it all together.
Symptoms: Unit Over Running, Unit Hot to touch, Frost & Ice in Refrigerator or Freezer, Leaking, Ice Maker not working. Digital Models will display “Service” indicators, some will say “Vacuum Condenser” newer units will show a little wrench symbol.
Now that you have your Model Number, I will begin to separate this guide according to your respective model numbers. Our next step is to locate and clean our condenser. This is perhaps the #1 issue in our industry.
If your Grill is located on Top.
The 300, 500, 600 & BI Series Sub-Zero Condensers are located above the unit, behind the grill, on the right side. You will need to remove any screws on the frame of the unit holding the grill in place, remove any springs holding the grill in place and fully remove grill exposing the Condenser on the upper right hand side of the unit. If you have a wooden carpentry panel, please remove it by pushing it up towards the ceiling and lifting it off its mount. Remove all screws holding the mount in place and put aside to gain best access to your condenser. There is usually about 5 screws on 600 series and even less on the 500 series. Once the condenser is in view, please vacuum it of all dust & debris. If the dust is stubborn, you can scrape it off with a Wire Brush from home depot. If you would like to go even farther, you may blow your condenser out with an Air Compressor. We do this because the dust has a way of settling into the condenser and further impeding air flow. As a professional, we always blow out the condenser.
If Your Grill is Located on the Bottom.
Stand Alone units like the 201, 501, 601, IC and 700 Series Condenser is located on the bottom of your unit. You can access the condenser by removing the screws holding in the Kick-Plate (grill). Please watch this video about removing the grill on a 700 series unit. Most of these units old and new operate the same way, there will be screws holding in the Kick-Plate. Once the Condenser is exposed please vacuum it, brush it or blow it out with an air compressor. If you have a 501 or 601 model the condenser may be located in the back right or back left of the unit.
After You Vacuum Your Condenser: Now that your Condenser is clean and clear of debris, you have greatly increased airflow over the mechanicals of your Sub-Zero. At this point if you have a digital 600, 700 IC or BI Series I would hit the power button and turn the machine off for about 15 minutes to give it a chance to cool down before restarting. If you have a 200, 300 or 500 series I would hit the Circuit Breaker and shut the machine down for about fifteen minutes to give it a chance to cool down before restarting. This goes the same for wine coolers and under the counter units. If this does not solve your problem you may require additional service, please read on.
